Nutella puppy chowis a HUGE favorite around our house, a sweet chocolatey crunchy treat. Creamy Nutella, warm chocolate, crunchy chex with a dusting of powder sugar come together for an amazing snack. Make this for after school snacks, parties, game nights. So many options and no one will be complaining.
WHAT IS PUPPY CHOW? WHAT IS MUDDY BUDDY?
Puppy chow, or sometimes also called Muddy Buddy is a dessert mainly made of corn and rice cereal, peanut butter, chocolate and powder sugar. For someone who doesn't love peanut butter, (but looooves nutella) or has a peanut allergy this nutella puppy chow is a great option for them! I feel the flavors in in this recipe blend better and taste so much better!
IS THIS RECIPE REALLY PEANUT FREE?
Yes! for PEANUTS. If you have a hazelnut allergy DO NOT MAKE. If you have a peanut allergy, be sure to use Nutella brand hazelnut chocolate as they ensure it is not made in a facility with any other peanuts.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE NUTELLA PUPPY CHOW?
- Nutella
- corn chex
- chocolate chips
- butter
- salt
- powder sugar
CAN I USE GENERIC BRAND NUTELLA FOR THIS RECIPE!
YES! As you can see in my photos I used a store brand of Nutella. I did have some problems with it however, It was not as creamy and smooth as name brand Nutella. Some store brands of hazelnut spread tend to be a little too oily, or too sticky and you might need to alter the recipe slightly for the perfect texture.
HOW TO MAKE NUTELLA MUDDY BUDDY
Start by measuring out 9 cups of Corn chex mix. You will want to place this in an extra large bowl for stirring.
MAKING THE CHOCOLATE COATING
In a separate bowl add nutella, chocolate chips, butter, and sea salt.
In a microwave heat mixture for 30 seconds and stir. Continue heating for 30 seconds until It's melted and mixed together. I heated mine for about 1 minute.
PROTIP- You do NOT want to over heat chocolate, it will stiffen instead of melt. If you feel you have over heated your chocolate slightly add 1 teaspoon of shortening and mix it in the hot chocolate mixture to help smooth it out.
MIXING YOUR CHOCOLATE AND CHEX MIX
Pour nutella mix over corn chem and stir gently. It will take a few minutes but the warm chocolate mixture will melt over all the chex after a few minutes of stirring.
CAN I ADD MORE CHEX?
yes! if you want your chocolate to chex ratio a little more thin add extra chex until it reaches your desired consistency. I actually used more- about 10 cups of chex, because I prefer less chocolate to chex ratio.
COATING YOUR PUPPY CHOW IN POWDER SUGAR
Add all your powder sugar to a large gallon bag. Add your chocolatey nutella chex mix, still warm and wet, to your gallon bag and shake.
PROTIP: I love doing this in two batches. It coats the chocolate little more evenly without too much clumping. But all 10 cups of chex mix will fit in the gallon bag if you need to grab and go.
Shake up your chex mix until its all coated in the delicious powder sugar!
HOW DO I STORE NUTELLA PUPPY CHOW?
I love to serve in a big bowl and where we are done snacking place it into an airtight container. It can remain at room temperature.
