Homemade Apple Pie From Scratch

Not much else in the world can beat homemade apple pie from scratch. Warm, spiced gooey apples with a buttery flakey crust is a definite crowd pleaser for the holidays or any time of year! This hot apple pie is definitely comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 5 med to large apples thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 Pastry for double-crust pie 9 inches
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 1 egg white
  • Additional sugar
  • ¼-1/2 cup salted caramel optional*

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine sugar, flour and spices; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Add sugar mixture;toss well to coat.
  • Line a 9-in. pie pan with half the pastry. Place apple filling into crust; dot with butter. If making this pie a salted caramel apple pie drizzle ¼-1/2 salted caramel sauce on top of apples.
  • Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pie. Cut a few slits in top. beat egg white until foamy; brush over pastry. Sprinkle sugar on top.
  • Bake at 375 degrees F for 35 minutes. Increase temperature to 400 degrees F and bake 10-15 minutes more or until golden.

Notes

*You can use homemade or store bought salted caramel sauce!

    • If your oven cooks on the warm side cover the sides of the pie crust with some foil to avoid burning. Then remove the foil in the last 15 minutes of baking.
    • Use a mixture of apples and avoid soft apples such as Golden or Red Delicious apples.
    • Feel free to adjust the spices to your own tastes.
    • If you've got the time, make a homemade pie crust rather than buying one at the store.
