What Is Hummus?
Hummus is a dip made of cooked or canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans), tahini sesame paste and lemon juice. Hummus has been eaten in the Middle East, Mediterranean and North African regions for as long as there are records. It is thought that it originated in Egypt.
About The Ingredients
All of the ingredients needed for this recipe can be purchased at your local grocery store. Here are a few items to note:
- Chick Peas - these are also called garbanzo beans, or chickpeas. You will find them labeled one or the other, or sometimes both like the can I picked up. They can be located by the beans on the canned food aisle.
- Tahini - this is the only ingredient that may be tough to locate. But I have found that most grocery stores now carry it. If you can't find it, there are several varieties sold on amazon.
- Pickled Beets - you can use canned beets or jarred. This is what gives this hummus it's earthy flavor and beautiful color.

How To Make Beet Hummus
Making hummus can be done easily in your food processor or blender. Let me tell you how to do it. When it comes to making dips like this I prefer to use my Blendtec. I created this in my wild side jar and it took literally seconds. We have been talking about Blendtec for a very long time and there is a reason why. They are the absolute best!
Step 1: Add extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, and beets to your blender jar or food processor.
Pro Tip: Always add liquids to the bottom of your blender. This gives the blade room to rotate and blend the ingredients easily.
Step 2: Add chick peas, garlic, and tahini paste, cumin and salt to the blender jar.
Step 3: Blend until smooth.
Step 4: Transfer to a bowl and drizzle with olive oil.
Step 5: Top with crumbled goat cheese. You can also add some other garnishes like fresh herbs, roasted chick peas, or sesame seeds.
