Skip the drive thru and make this seasonable favorite at home - year round! This Copycat Chick Fil A Peppermint Milkshake - tastes just like the restaurant and can be made with a handful of ingredients and a few minutes.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
A milkshake similar to this one, is served at the fast food restaurant Chick Fil A, but only during the winter months. The first time I took a sip of the peppermint shake I was in love. This shake has pieces of candy cane, shavings of chocolate, and a smooth vanilla ice cream. Even after it was gone from the menu I would often drive thru and ask if they still had them. Some stores have leftover supplies a few months after the promo is gone. But after that...its an entire year before you get to drink one again. So I came up with a solution - make it at home.

About The Ingredients
While the real Chick Fil A Shake has many ingredients, this recipe is simple. Everything you need can be purchased at your local grocery store.
- Semi-sweet chocolate baking bar - you are going to shave the chocolate with a microplane or cheese grater. There are a lot of recipes out there that use chocolate chips. You have to to use a baking bar - the chocolate chips make it waxy.
- Peppermint candy canes - the little pieces of peppermint candy are what make this shake so dang good. You can also sub peppermint bark for the semisweet chocolate and candy canes, but I prefer using the candy canes and chocolate bar.
- Milk - it wouldn't be a milkshake without a milk! I like to use whole milk in milk shakes so they are a little more rich. If you don't have whole milk you can use heavy cream combined with low or nonfat milk for a richer cream milk.
- Peppermint extract - when you are purchasing make sure that you get PEPPERMINT and not just "Mint". Some of the mint extracts are actually spearmint.
- Vanilla ice cream - use a nice quality ice cream when making this shake.

How Do I Make A Chick Fil A Peppermint Milkshake?
Step 1: Shave your chocolate bar using a microplane or cheese grater.
Pro Tip: Opt for shaved chocolate rather than blending chocolate chips. I find that chocolate chips have a waxy texture, and using the shaved chocolate really replicates the texture and flavor of the Chick Fil A version.
Step 2: Crush your candy canes into pebble sized piece by pulsing them in a blender.
Step 3: Add Milk.
Pro Tip: always put liquids in the bottom of your blender. This allows the blade to turn and blend your items.
Step 4: Top with shaved chocolate.
Step 5: Pour in 1 teaspoon peppermint extract.
Pro Tip: Make sure that you get "PEPPERMINT" and not just "Mint". Some of the mint extracts are actually spearmint.
Step 6: Add in 4 cups vanilla ice cream.
Step 7: Pulse until you get your desired consistency.
Step 8: Pour into 4 glasses and top with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.
Blender Recommendations
Of course, any blender will work for this recipe. But I love having a high power blender at home. It is the appliance I use the most, and one I will never be without. For years I purchased cheap blenders that broke often. Since investing in a good blender (I use a Blendtec) I haven't had an issue once. So take my advice and skip the cheap ones and invest in a nice one when you can. Here are a few to consider:
Chick Fil A Peppermint Milkshake FAQs
Sometimes I like my shakes as is - I skip the whipped cream and cherries. But with this peppermint chip milkshake I love a dollop of whipped cream, ALWAYS a cherry, and a dusting of crushed candy cane.
This shake should be able to be sipped thru a straw. Some shakes served a restaurants these days aren't milkshakes but rather stirred soft serve. If you prefer a thicker shake, add more ice cream.
They generally come out towards the end of November and are available until January. Check your local store for the exact date. In 2022 the shake is released November 14th and is available thru January 7, 2023.

One of the best copy cat recipes I’ve tried. I personally would reduce the candy cane by probably half. If your cautious try half to begin and add if you prefer more. Thank you for the new (much less expensive) holiday tradition!!!
