This recipe is a twist on classic hot chocolate. It starts with canned coconut milk combined with cows milk and warmed, and also some real chocolate melted in! I went with chocolate chips, because I wanted it to be rich and delicious and didn't think cocoa powder would give me the taste I was looking for. This coconut milk hot chocolate is topped with whipped cream and toasted coconut and for perfection! This is the perfect cup of goodness to snuggle up with on the couch.
What Do I Need To Make Coconut Milk Hot Chocolate?
For this recipe, you'll need:
- ¼ cup sweetened coconut flakes
- 15 oz canned coconut milk
- 16 oz low fat cows milk
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 teaspoon coconut extract
- whipped cream
How do you make coconut hot chocolate from scratch?
If you can stir, you can make this divine hot cocoa. Let me show you how:
1. In a small skillet add sweetened coconut flakes. Over medium heat toast, stirring frequently, until golden brown. Set aside.
2. In a large saucepan, add cows milk.
3. Pour in canned coconut milk.
4. Add chocolate chips. Using medium heat, stir until chocolate chips start to melt.
5. Add 1 teaspoon coconut extract.
6. Stir and cook until frothy and chocolate is completely combined.
7. Pour into four mugs.
8. Top with whipped cream and reserved toasted coconut.

Yes! I would recommend using the coconut milk from a carton in place of the dairy milk. The canned milk is too thick to use in place of the cow's milk.
